Heed Audio Q-FLT Mains Filter

With the change in our electrical household appliances, the load profile of the electrical network has also changed. There are many switch-mode power supplies, or more complex loads used nowadays, such as inverter air conditioners, induction hobs, and electric car chargers. These devices can pollute the electrical network with a wide variety of noises, which can get through and can be heard in analogue hi-fi equipment. Most notable is the periodic mechanical hum from relatively large toroidal transformers, caused by the – supposedly zero – DC component of the mains voltage.

The Heed Audio Q-FLT greatly reduces this effect. If the transformer noise of an amplifier is caused by a DC component of the mains network, the use of Q-FLT will make it virtually silent. It works up to 1.2 Volts DC, which in practice is a very generous threshold and enough for most possible scenarios.

In addition to this, the Q-FLT incorporates a second stage, a common mode noise filter. This greatly reduces every spike and noise in the audio frequency and closely above it, supplying the following device with clean power.

The Transcap philosophy is also evident in the details of this product. We devoted extra time to fine-tuning the filter so that, unlike similar products, the sound would not become muffled or cloudy. This turned out even better than expected, because not only does it not spoil the sound, but overall it improves it. This means that the presentation is more transparent and effortless, while maintaining the excitement of the music. And of course, without hearing a pop every time the fridge starts.

DC BLOCKER

The Q-FLT has 2x 39.000 uF coupling capacitors to bridge DC jumps. Its effectively removes up to 1.2V DC voltages from the forwarded AC power, leaving very low residual DC energy and corresponding distortion.

AC FILTER

The AC filter section is based on a high current, common mode toroidal choke, with extremely high permeability ferrite core. The filter’s frequency range is slightly overlapping the audible band from above, effectively removing all unwanted noise from the mains power, while not doing any harm in the useful region.

FUN FACT

Among other tests, Heed Audio check all Q-FLT with a high power heat gun as well. In addition to the smooth heat from it, they can inspect the real-world efficiency backwards. Switching on and off this particular tool is generating loud pops in their workshop radio, but using it through the Q-FLT the reception is immaculate.
